COLUMBUS, Ohio - Cleveland State shot an opening round 313 (+29) and is in 24th place after the first round of the NCAA Central Regional played on Thursday at the par-71, 7,420 yard Scarlet Course.

The Vikings began today's round on the 10th hole and will start tomorrow's second round on the first tee.

Patrick Elber led the Vikings, who are playing in the regional for the second time in three years, with a five-over-par 76, including a birdie on his final hole. It was one of just two birdies on the day for CSU as Kent Monas birdied the par-five, 12th hole.

"This is a tough golf course and we just didn't get anything going today," head coach Steve Weir said. "We didn't hit the ball to bad, but couldn't make any putts. We made to many bogies and not enough birdies.

"We are going to get some rest tonight and try to execute the same gameplan we had today. We are not out of this by any means."

Doug Barber shot a 78 to follow Elber, while Jake Scott (79), Monas (80) and Kyle Cobb (82) rounded out CSU's group.

Wake Forest shot an opening round 290 and leads Alabama by two strokes and Oklahoma State by three.

Brandon Gielow of Wake Forest fired a two-under-par 69 and holds a one shot first round lead over five golfers.

The second round is slated to begin at 7:00 a.m. on the Scarlet Course on Friday. The Vikings are scheduled to be among the final five groups beginning with a 12:59 p.m. tee time.

The NCAA Central Regional is a 54-hole, three-day tournament with the top eight teams and the top two individuals not on those teams qualifying for the NCAA Championships at Purdue.
