LEXINGTON, Ky. - Cleveland State's Jake Scott shot rounds of 71 and 70 and leads with a three-under-par 141 following the first two rounds of the Horizon League Championship on Monday.
Scott is the defending medalist at the league championship.
As a team, the Vikings, who won the league title last season, are tied for second place following team scores of 302 in the morning and 297 in the afternoon. CSU's 599 total is three shots behind leader Detroit (300-296 - 596) and tied with Green Bay (299-300 - 599).
"We are not out of this tournament by any means, but we will have to play a little better tomorrow to make up three shots," head coach Steve Weir said. "The closing holes on this course are very difficult so anything can happen. We have to play our games tomorrow and limit the number of mental mistakes we make."
The event is being played at the par-72, 7,031-yard Kearney Hills G.C.
Youngstown State is in fourth place (614) and is followed by Loyola (616) and Butler and Wright State who both totaled 618 to round out the scoring.
Like last season, Weir sent Scott out in CSU's first group hoping the senior could get off to a hot start and post a low number.
After bogeying the first two holes of his round, Scott rebounded to finish the first round at one-under-par 71, recording seven birdies. He came back with five more birdies and three bogeys in the afternoon round to post a 70.
"I wanted to get Jake out there to get us off to a good start and post a low number," Weir said. "I thought if he was able to do that, the other guys would relax and play their games."
Freshman James Boxley had a good first day, carding rounds of 74-77 (151) to tie for 10th place. Sophomore Kent Monas is also tied for 10th place.
Monas struggled to a 79 in the opening round, but knocked seven shots off his total in the afternoon round, finishing with a 72.
Wright State's Charlie Doll is one shot behind Scott (142) after rounds of 68-74.
The final round of the Horizon League Championship will be played on Tuesday, April 28. Groups will go off the first and 10th tees beginning at 8:00 a.m. in hopes of finishing the tournament before inclement weather is forcasted to move into the area tomorrow afternoon.
