GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Cleveland State shot a one-under-par 283 in the opening day of the Desert Shootout on Thursday at the par-71, 7,105-yard Palm Valley Golf Course.

The 54-hole, three-day event is being hosted by the University of Denver.

CSU was playing without its top lineup as junior Kyle Cobb is out with an ankle injury, but still managed to finish under par.

"I thought we played fairly well today, especially since we couldn't put our top lineup out there," head coach Steve Weir said. "The course isn't overly difficult and hopefully we can go out again tomorrow and put up another low number."

Senior Jake Scott and sophomore Kent Monas paced the Vikings with rounds of three-under-par 68, while junior Patrick Elber fired a 72.

The second round of the tournament, which features Air Force, Boise State, Cleveland State, Coastal Carolina, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri State, Nebraska, New Mexico (Individuals only), Northern Iowa, Southern Utah, Tulsa and Utah Valley, is scheduled for Friday, March 20.
