HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Cleveland State men's golf team opened the 2010 spring season at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at the par-72, 6,850-yard Wexford Plantation G.C.

The event was originally scheduled to be 54 holes, but was cut short to 36 holes (18 both days) after rain on Monday.

CSU placed 17th at the event with a two-round total of 662. After a 335 on Monday, the Vikings cut eight shots off on Tuesday, firing a 327.

"This wasn't how we hoped to open the season, but hopefully we can use this as a good learning experience moving forward this season," head coach Steve Weir said. "We knew coming into the spring that we were going to have a young, inexperienced team and it showed this week. But we won't use that as an excuse. We are going to continue to work hard and improve on this performance."

Senior Kyle Cobb was the Vikings top finisher, tying for 58th place after rounds of 74-82 (156).

Freshman Jon Riemer turned in a quality performance in the final round, carding a career-low 75 en route to tying for 71st place at 158 (83-75).

CSU will have a few weeks to regroup, returning to action on March 15-16 at the South Dakota Invitational in Primm Valley, Nev.
