HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Cleveland State men's golf team opened the 2009 spring season by playing 36 holes on Monday at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. The Vikings carded a 308 in the first round and came back with a 311 in round two.

The 54-hole, two-day event is being hosted by Francis Marion at the par-72, 6.850-yard Wexford Plantation.

"It was a long day, but overall I am happy with where we are at for our first spring tournament," head coach Steve Weir said. "This is a really tough course and it didn't get above 55 degrees all day with 10-12 mile per hour winds so conditions were difficult.

"We didn't make any mental mistakes and I am satisfied with the way we played. We'll get a good nights rest and come out tomorrow and try to put a low round together."

Junior Patrick Elber led the Vikings with rounds of 74-77 (151), while junior Kyle Cobb had a two-round total of 153 (74-79). Senior Jake Scott shot rounds of 79-78 (157).

The tournament concludes with the final 18 holes on Tuesday, Feb. 24, with a shotgun start scheduled for 8:30 a.m.

This year's field includes Francis Marion, Bowling Green State University, Cleveland State, Davidson College, George Mason University, George Washington University, Marshall University, Ohio University, Presbyterian College, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Joseph's University, USC Upstate, USC Aiken, Wofford College, and defending tournament champion Elon University.
