Reed (2002-10) guided Cleveland State into one of the top all-around athletics programs in the Horizon League during his tenure, both on the field and in the classroom. Under his guidance, the Vikings claimed their first-ever James J. McCafferty Cup in 2007-08, which is presented annually by the Horizon League in recognition of the league's all-sport champion. During the 2007-08 season, the Vikings won five Horizon League titles (women's basketball, volleyball, softball, men's golf, men's tennis) and went on to claim 11 total championships during Reed's tenure. Along with the 11 championships, the Vikings made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament 15 times, turning Cleveland State into a nationally recognized program.

After being named the fourth Director of Athletics in school history in 2002, Reed helped the Vikings progress in the classroom, as he saw significant improvement in the number of student-athletes honored at the annual academic honors luncheon, while the department maintained a 3.00 GPA or higher during seven of his eight years at the helm.

During his time at Cleveland State, Reed also represented the Horizon League on the NCAA Management Council, served as the President of the NCAA I-AAA Athletics Director's Association, was a member of the NCAA Basketball Academic Enhancement Group, and served as the Chairman of the John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards committee.

Reed will be the seventh administrator to be inducted into the Cleveland State Athletics Hall of Fame.
