CHICAGO, Ill. - The Cleveland State cross country team finished sixth of 10 teams at the 2010 Horizon League Championship on Saturday morning at Montrose Beach. It was the Vikings best finish at the league championship since CSU was sixth in 1996.

It was also the first time in program history that the Vikings finished ahead of at least four teams at the league championship.

"This was such a great race for us and I am so proud of the way that we competed today," head coach Joe Jaketic said. "This is what we have been working for since August and I could not be more excited about what we were able to accomplish today.

"Every one of the girls is so excited and have worked very hard to get to this point today. I came to the championship thinking if we could beat two teams it would be a good day, but this team has been so resilient all year and they proved it again today."

The Vikings totaled 157 points to finish just eight points behind fifth place Wright State who scored 149 points.

Butler won the title with 18 points, while Loyola was the runner-up with 78 points. Milwaukee finished third with 103 points and Youngstown State was fourth with 111 points.

UIC was seventh with 183 points and was followed by Detroit (187), Valparaiso (198) and Green Bay (256).

"There was not a large gap between us and Wright State and we had a chance to sneak by them for fifth place, but regardless, it was still a great day for us," Jaketic said.

Junior Allison Craine was the Vikings top finisher, placing 16th in 19:01. Craine missed earning all-league honors by just eight seconds as the top 14 finishers were dubbed with the honor.

"Allison ran a great race and I thought she was going to be able to get into that top-14," Jaketic said. "She has run hard all year and should be proud of everything that she has accomplished this year."

Junior Brittany Elmlinger was CSU's second finisher, placing 20th in 19:12, giving the Vikings two top-20 finishers.

"We have rarely had anyone in the top-20 since I have been here and today we had two," Jaketic said. "That shows just how far this program has come over the last four to five years and what kind of student-athletes we have been able to get."

Junior Kari Haywood ran a personal-best time of 19:47 to place 38th overall, while junior Kelly Zaleski was 42nd in 19:56.

Andria Bazilevich was the Vikings fifth finisher, placing 50th in 20:09.

CSU will conclude its season when the Vikings compete at the Great Lakes Regional Championship on Saturday, Nov. 13, in Oakland, Mich.
