PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - The Cleveland State cross country team brought home a second place finish from the Shawnee State Invitational Friday afternoon, as three Vikings placed in the top-10 and four additional runners placed in the top-20. CSU finished with 45 points, behind Shawnee State who won the invite with 30 points.
"I am very proud of the way everyone ran today," head coach Joe Jaketic said. "The weather was excellent for the race and everyone ran very well. The first group today finished the closest that I have seen since I have been here and it was great to see. This was definitely one of the best races overall for us of the season."
The first group to finish for CSU included Allison Craine, Kendra Kezur and Kelly Zaleski. Craine led the Vikings with a sixth place finish in a time of 19:40, while Kezur was right behind her in seventh place with a time of 19:49. Zaleski recorded a season-best time of 19:49 to finish eighth.
Katie Webb, Tori Holt, Kari Haywood and Brittany Elmlinger all finished in the top-20 for the Vikings, led by Webb who finished 11th with a time of 20:36. Holt finished 13th in 20:43, Haywood finished 14th in 20:46 and Elmlinger finished 18th with a season-best time of 20:57.
Angela Kirila, Andria Bazilevich, Melissa Boyes and Ashley Berlin rounded out CSU's competitors at the Shawnee State Invitational, as Kirila placed 24th (21:23), Bazilevich finished 30th (22:37), Boyes placed 46th (24:27) and Berlin finished 46th (24:39).
CSU will be in action next at the Penn State National on Friday, October 14.
