CLEVELAND -- Jenna Maddocks, a senior outside hitter who carries a 3.98 GPA in early childhood education, is a member of the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Volleyball third team that was released on Wednesday.

Named the Horizon League Player of the Week on Oct. 24, Maddocks ranked second on the team in kills (2.92), third in digs (2.42) and fourth in hitting percentage (.237). She recorded a team-high 10 double-doubles on the year, including an 18-kill, 22-dig effort in a five-game win over Wright State on Oct. 21.

The vice-president of CSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Council, Maddocks is also the secretary for the Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society, a member of Golden Key and a three-time recipient of CSU's Athletic Academic Excellence Award.

Cleveland State recently completed its best season in over two decades, posting a 19-10 overall mark while finishing second in the Horizon League with an 11-3 record.

"Jenna is the consummate student-athlete," CSU head coach Chuck Voss said. "I never once had to worry about her work ethic in the gym or what she was doing academically because she's such a self-motivated person."

A Norwalk, Ohio native, Maddocks is just the fifth Viking to garner Academic All-America honors in the 53-year history of the program. She joins Pat Lyons (men's basketball, 1973), Jennifer Webber (fencing, 1992), Amy Jauert (softball, 1997) and Joachim Walker (men's soccer, 2002).

The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America; a 2,000-member organization consisted of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
