CLEVELAND, Ohio - Former Cleveland State volleyball standout Mel Badziong (Snyder) will be returning to her alma mater, as she will be joining the CSU staff as an assistant coach for the 2012 season. Badziong's primary responsibilities will include recruiting and working with the slate of summer camps.

Chuck Voss, Cleveland State head volleyball coach, made the announcement on Monday, June 18.

"We are thrilled to have Mel join the Cleveland State coaching staff," Voss said. "Mel will bring an energy and passion to the sideline that will be very beneficial for everyone on the team. Mel was a great leader when she was a student-athlete at CSU and I believe that she will continue that throughout her coaching career."

Prior to joining the CSU staff, Badziong served as the head coach of the Cleveland Volleyball Company for four years, leading the club to an Open National Championship during 2011. Under Badziong's direction the club also had a top-10 national finish and two top-five finishes.

Badziong also spent time as the assistant varsity volleyball coach and head JV coach at Amherst Steele High School.

Badziong, a four-year letterwinner at Cleveland State, finished her career ranked third all-time at CSU with 4,076 career assists and fifth with 130 service aces. She also holds three of the top-10 season assist records; 1st (1,469 - 2007), 4th (1,302 - 2005) and 8th (1,227 - 2006).

While at CSU, Badziong was named to the All-Horizon League First Team twice (2006 & 2007) and picked up AVCA All-Region First Team honors following her senior season. From 2004 to 2007 the Vikings posted an overall record of 76-41 and captured the program's first-ever Horizon League Championship and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament during 2007.

Badziong graduated from Cleveland State in 2009 with a degree in Middle Childhood Education. During her time at CSU she was named to the Dean's List and was a three-time member of the Horizon League All-Academic Team.
