CHICAGO, Ill. - Kayla Lefeld totaled 19 kills and nine digs, but Cleveland State fell at UIC, 3-1, in Horizon League action on Friday night at UIC Pavillion.
Match scores were 25-14, 25-21, 21-25, 26-24.
The loss dropped CSU to 4-14 overall and 3-6 in the league, while the Flames improved to 9-12 overall (3-6 HL).
Jenni Ramminger chipped in 10 kills for the Vikings, while Beth Greulich and Amy Benz had eight kills apiece. Jordan Goad handed out 46 assists and Maggie Bonomini tallied a match-best 22 digs.
UIC led 7-5 in the first set, but was able to open up that advantage by going on a 10-3 run to take a nine point lead and win the set.
The Vikings took a 10-5 lead in the second set, but the Flames were able to rally with seven straight points and take a 12-10 lead. UIC never trailed the rest of the set in taking a 2-0 lead.
CSU avoided the sweep by winning set three as the Vikings took a 16-10 lead on an Amy Grabiec service ace. UIC was able to cut the lead to one point (19-18), but CSU closed the set on a 6-3 run to pull within 2-1.
UIC appeared on the verge of earning the win, taking a 22-18 lead on a Katerina Hanackova kill in the fourth set. However, the Vikings stormed back to even the set at 23-23. After the teams traded points, UIC received a kill from Hanackova and a block assist by Katarina Nedeljkovic and Epiphany Davis to seal the match.
Hanackova tied Lefeld for match-high honors with 19 kills and Casie Sullivan finished with 12.
The Vikings continue their two-match roadtrip through Chicago on Saturday when CSU travels to Loyola for a 5:00 p.m. EDT match.
