CLEVELAND, Ohio- Amy Benz recorder her 1,000th kill in her career as the Vikings swept the Bulldogs Tuesday at Woodling Gym.

Cleveland State moved to 13-1 overall and 4-1 in Horizon League play. Butler fell to 9-7 and took their first league loss, and is now 4-1.

"Once we got ourselves calmed down, we were able to focus," head coach Chuck Voss said. "We have worked hard this week and we are staring to see what kind of team we are."

Kara Koch had 14 kills, which lead the Vikes, and Lindsey Griffith had 12 kills.

Match scores were 25-12, 25-20, 25-19.

The first set was the best set of the day, as neither team could pull away. Cleveland State held the biggest lead at 12-9, but Butler evened up the set at 14. The Vikings took the lead for good on a Megan Barhorst kill to put the score at 21-20.

The Vikings went out to a big 10-4 lead in the second set with five straight that were set up Jordan Goad. However, the Bulldogs took the next nine out of twelve points to tie the set up at 13. The teams battled the remainder of the set out, with the Vikings pushing out to a 21-18 lead. During that time, Amy Benz had a kill to make it 18-16 in favor of the Vikings, but it was also her 1,000th career kill as a Viking. Cleveland State would go on to take the set, 25-20.

Benz now becomes the 14th Viking to reach 1,000 kills and finished with 5 on the day.

"You have to be steady everyday and have to be focused," Voss said. "Amy has done that for four years now."

Cleveland State once again jumped out to the lead and once again, it was too much for the Bulldogs. Megan Barhorst and Amanda Medvetz set the tone and put the Vikings ahead to 10-6. Butler made it interesting at 19-17, but the Vikings were able to put them away with several kills from Koch.

The Vikings turnaround right away and play at home on Wednesday (Oct 6) against Wright State at 7:00 p.m.
