Ernie Gilbert

  • Position:
    Assistant Coach
  • Last College:
    1st Year

When Chuck Voss hired Ernie Gilbert in May as the program's first full time assistant, he got more than just your typical assistant coach.

In addition to his more than three decades of experience, Gilbert also has a year of head coaching experience under his belt.

"I am ecstatic to have Ernie join our family," said Voss. "He brings a great deal of experience and knowledge that will help enhance all aspects of our program."

Gilbert's primary focus will be to serve as the recruiting coordinator. He will also assist in all other facets of the program.

A 1973 graduate of Ball State, Gilbert started his coaching career at Ohio State as an assistant under Jim Stone. After a stint as the head coach at Ohio Dominican, Gilbert moved on to assistant posts at Eastern Kentucky and Bowling Green before being named the head coach at Tennessee State in 1994.

Gilbert then moved on to Tennessee Tech the next year, and went on to help direct the Golden Eagles to the 1997 Ohio Valley Conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Tech's squads were ranked regionally by the American Volleyball Coaches Association every year from 1995-99 in addition to garnering the AVCA's Team Academic Award in 2001 and 1997.

Gilbert and his wife Jennie have four daughters, Abby (24), Kara (22), Hannah (18) and Aislyn (4), and a son, Nathan (20). The Gilberts reside in Middleburg Heights, Ohio.
