Cleveland State Volleyball Earns Five-Set Victory At Akron

AKRON, Ohio - The Cleveland State volleyball team closed out non-league play Friday, earning a five-set victory at Akron. The Vikings now stand at 6-5 on the season entering #HLVB play.

Nia Hall led the Viking offense with 18 kills, while Liberty Torres added 17 and JeriLynn Koehler chipped in 13.

Karly Klaer finished with 50 assists on the night, along with 15 digs, six kills and four blocks.

The Viking defense was led by Emma Walker with 30 digs, while the Vikings combined for 15.0 total blocks, including seven from Madison Olinger and six from Koehler.

After a back and forth start to the first set, the Vikings were able to gain a late 20-19 lead on a JeriLynn Koehler kill, before earning a 23-21 edge on back-to-back blocks from Koehler.

The Vikings then earned set-point on a Liberty Torres kill, before closing out the 25-23 first set victory on an Akron error.

The Zips responded with a win in the second frame to even the match at one set each.

During the third set the Vikings were able to gain an early 6-2 lead on a Nia Hall and Koehler block, before posting three straight points to earn a 10-3 edge.

Cleveland State then extended its lead to 13-4 on a trio of kills from Liberty Torres and Karly Klaer, before holding off an Akron run to regain a 14-8 lead on another Torres kill. The Vikings were then able to hold a sizable lead for the remainder of the set, earning the 25-18 third set victory on yet another Torres kill.

Akron was then able to pick up a win in set four, forcing a fifth and deciding set.

The two teams traded points early on in the fifth set, as Cleveland State was able to gain an early three-point lead at 6-3 following a Klaer service ace, Torres kill and Akron error. A trio of kills from Hall and Koehler extended Cleveland State's lead to 10-5, before the Vikings earned a 12-7 advantage on a Koehler kill.

Cleveland State then posted the final three points of the set, closing out the 15-8 fifth set victory with a Klaer block and a Zips error.

This marked the third straight five-set match for the Vikings.

The Vikings will begin Horizon League play on Tuesday, September 19, traveling to IUPUI for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
