Vikings Extend Winstreak To Eight with 3-1 Victory At UIC

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Cleveland State volleyball team extended its winstreak to eight-straight matches Friday evening, picking up a 3-1 victory at UIC. The victory gives Cleveland State a 17-4 overall record this season, including an 8-1 mark against Horizon League opponents.

Match Stats
· Grace Kauth and Alexis Middlebrooks led the Viking offense Friday evening, Kauth posting a team-high 17 kills and Middlebrooks adding 10 kills.
· Sara Skeens was just shy of a double-digit kill effort, finishing the match with nine kills.
· Gina Kilner tallied 34 assists against the Flames.
· Shannon Grega and Grace Kauth led the Viking defense, Grega with 14 digs and Kauth with 10 digs.
· As a team, the Vikings notched 13.0 total blocks, led by Aaliyah Slappy who recorded nine total blocks.
· Sydney Mast added seven blocks for the Vikings, while Alexis Middlebrooks added four blocks.

Match Notes
· Friday's 3-1 victory at UIC gave Cleveland State the season sweep of the Flames, as the Vikings also picked up a 3-0 victory against UIC at home earlier this season.
· Cleveland State's victory at UIC extended its current winstreak to eight straight matches, as the Vikings have now posted eight consecutive wins eight times under head coach Chuck Voss.
· Friday's win also kept Cleveland State perfect during the month of October, as the Vikings now stand at 6-0 since the start of the month.
· With her nine blocks against UIC, Aaliyah Slappy eclipsed the 300-total block mark for her career, ending the match with 308.
· Grace Kauth recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 17 kills and 10 digs.
· Sydney Mast set a career-high with her seven blocks against UIC.

The Match
During the opening set, the Vikings raced out to a 5-0 lead, and then extended their advantage at the 11-5 mark following a Sara Skeens kill. Cleveland State went on to hold a lead for the rest of the frame then, and captured the 25-18 victory on a Gina Kilner kill.

After dropping the second set, the Vikings came out strong during the third frame, holding the advantage for the majority of the set. After the two teams traded points at the midway part of the frame, the Vikings were able to rattle off 10 straight points to regain a 23-14 advantage. During this stretch, the Vikings got points off of kills from Grace Kauth, Aaliyah Slappy, and Sydney Mast and multiple Cleveland State blocks. After UIC put a halt to Cleveland State's point streak, the Vikings bounced back with back-to-back points on a Kauth kill and UIC error to capture the 25-15 set victory.

The fourth set was much tighter throughout the first part of the frame, as both teams traded points until Cleveland State was able to post back-to-back points on a Slappy kill and UIC error to gain a 16-14 advantage. The Vikings would go on to hold the lead for the remainder of the frame then, closing out the set and the match with two straight points from a Skeens kill and a Slappy/Mast block.
