Vikings Improve To 18-4 On The Season With Sweep Of UIC

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team notched its eighth 3-0 sweep of the season Saturday afternoon, picking up a Horizon League victory against UIC. With the win, the Vikings improve to 18-4 overall and 7-1 in league action.

Match Stats
· Christina Toth and Grace Kauth led the Viking offense - Toth notching 14 kills and Kauth recording 10 kills.
· Alexis Middlebrooks recorded nine kills and a team-high five blocks.
· Gina Kilner tallied 37 assists, helping CSU record a .324 hitting percentage on the match.
· Dayna Roberts and Nikki Holmes led the Viking defense, Roberts with a team-high 13 digs and Holmes with 12 digs.
· Gina Kilner and Christina Toth each tallied three blocks.

Match Notes
· With her 37 assists, Gina Kilner now ranks ninth on the CSU career assist list with 1,466 helpers.
· With her 13 digs, Dayna Roberts cracked the top-10 on the CSU career digs list, finishing the match ranking 10th with 1,056 career digs.
· With her 14 kills, Christina Toth eclipsed the 800-kill mark for her career, ending the match with 858.
· The Vikings have now won 10 of their last 11 matches, and remain the only Horizon League team to have just one loss in league play.

The Match
During the opening set, both teams traded points throughout the start of the frame, until Cleveland State gained an 11-7 advantage following a Grace Kauth service ace. The Vikings were then able to control play for the remainder of the frame, extending their lead to 19-14 following an Alexis Middlebrooks kill, and then went on to close out the frame with another Middlebrooks kill.

The second set was much of the same, as both teams battled throughout the first few points of the set, until Cleveland State earned a five-point advantage at 13-8 following kills from Gina Kilner and Middlebrooks. Despite a mini UIC comeback, the Vikings were able to hold their lead for the rest of the set, earning the second set victory on a Christina Toth kill.

During the third set the two teams once again traded points to open the frame, before a 4-1 run by the Vikings put the score at 14-10 Cleveland State. The Vikings then outscored UIC 11-6 over the final part of the set, earning the match victory with a block from Toth and Kilner.
