LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After picking up AVCA All-Region accolades last week, the Cleveland State volleyball duo of Marie Frease and Kara Koch were named AVCA Honorable Mention All-America Wednesday (Dec. 12) morning. The American Volleyball Coaches Association made the announcement of their All-America selections Wednesday.
Frease and Koch are the sixth and seventh Vikings to be awarded AVCA All-America Honorable Mention, joining Jamie Bouyer (2004), Nickole Kennedy (2005), Liz Fazio (2009), Jordan Goad(2009) and Beth Greulich (2009).
Koch ended the regular season averaging a league-best 4.71 kills per set, while she also ranked seventh nationally in the category. This year Koch became the fifth Viking to record both 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs, ending her time as a Viking with 1,576 kills and 1,047 digs. She finished her career ranked in the top-two in five categories in the CSU career record book; Kills (1,576-2nd), Kills Per Set (3.75-2nd), Attack Attempts (4,357-1st), Total Points (1,754-2nd) and Points Per Set (4.18-2nd).
Frease led the Vikings and the league with a .345 hitting percentage this year, while she also ranked 68th nationally. For the season she tallied 297 kills on 661 attempts with just 69 errors. Frease ended her career with a .322 hitting percentage - which ranks third on the all-time career hitting percentage list at CSU and ranks fourth in the league record book.
Along with Frease and Koch, Green Bay's Brittany Groth and Valparaiso's Taylor Root represented the Horizon League as All-America Honorable Mention selections.
