CLEVELAND, Ohio - Madeleine (Maddy) Outman has been named the head women's track and field coach at Cleveland State University. CSU Director of Athletics John Parry made the announcement on Wednesday morning.
Outman will begin her appointment on Monday (Sept. 19).
"I am very grateful to John Parry and the committee for giving me the opportunity to build a successful women's track and field program at Cleveland State," Outman said. Coach Joe Jaketic has done an outstanding job of leading the cross country team to athletic and academic success, and I look forward to working with him as we provide more competitive opportunities for our young women. I am honored to bring my passion for coaching track and field to this class institution and look forward to getting started."
"Maddy has a proven record of success as a coach and as a competitor," Parry said. "She also understands the importance of every student-athlete reaching their potential in the classroom and in competition. She will hit the ground running as we build a women's track program at Cleveland State University."
Outman most recently served as the head track and field coach at Ursuline College in 2014-15 after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach for the cross country and track and field programs. Outman helped guide the Arrows from an unstructured NAIA program to a top-40 team nationally, coaching the school's first two NCAA All-American athletes (800-meters & 100-meter hurdles).
In 2014, Outman led Ursuline to the GMAC outdoor championship, the first-ever conference championship in school history in any sport. She also led the team to the inaugural conference indoor championship in 2015, earning GMAC Coach of the Year accolades.
Outman's squad, which featured 22 student-athletes, combined to set more than 40 school records, 100 top-five all-time program marks and more than 120 lifetime bests.
Prior to her time at Ursuline, Outman was an assistant track and field coach and recruiting coordinator at Emory University from 2010-12. While at Emory, she was a three-time NCAA South/Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year, which was selected by the nation's head track and field coaches. She earned the honor for the 2011 and 2012 outdoor seasons, as well as the 2012 indoor season.
In addition, Outman coached Emory student-athletes to eight NCAA All-America finishes, 50 conference championship titles, three conference team titles, 11 school records, six conference records and more than 35 national qualifying marks.
From 2008-10, Outman served as a volunteer coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP).
This past year, Outman took a gap year from collegiate coaching to train for the 2016 Olympic Trials.
Outman earned a Bachelor's of Arts in Psychology and American Studies in 2008 from Williams College and her Master's of Arts in Sociology from IUP in 2010.
While competing collegiately, Outman was a 13-time NCAA All-American and a four-time Academic All-American. She was the Division II Atlantic Region Field Athlete of the Year in 2009 and 2010 and holds 10 school records at IUP and six more at Williams.
Outman was the IUP and PSAC winner of the NCAA Woman of the Year award in 2009.
