SKILLMAN, N.J. - The Cleveland State women's tennis duo of Catrine Bjerrehus and Alex Power picked up a pair of postseason awards last week, as they were both named ITA Scholar-Athletes for the 2011-12 season. The honor is the fourth of Bjerrehus' career, while it marks the second time that Power has earned the accolade.

"Catrine and Alex were both very valuable to us on the court this year, in fact, both of them would have a strong case to be named MVP," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "This award, however, shows that they are working just as hard off the court and that is what Viking Tennis is about. Catrine and Alex follow a long list of former Cleveland State tennis players who have excelled on the court, in the classroom and in the community. Being named an ITA Scholar-Athlete definitely sets an example for those who follow in their footsteps."

Bjerrehus, who recently graduated with a degree in business administration, was the lone senior on the Viking roster this season and led CSU to the Horizon League Championship match for the second straight year. The Denmark native was a two-time academic all-league honoree and posted a 3.84 GPA during her senior year. Bjerrehus finished her CSU career ranked fourth all-time with 62 career singles victories and was a four-time first team all-league honoree.

Power, a pre-med major who posted a 3.69 grade point average during the 2011-12 academic year, was one of just four players to go undefeated in league action this season. The Powell, Ohio native finished her sophomore season with a team-best 25-12 singles record, which tied for second all-time on the single season wins list at CSU.

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1) be a varsity letterwinner, 2) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
