CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State sophomore Kara Sherwood was named the Horizon League Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week Tuesday afternoon, earning the honor for the week of Monday, April 2 - Sunday, April 8. Sherwood, who is the second Viking to earn the accolade this season, led Cleveland State to a pair of Horizon League victories last weekend.

"Kara has been playing solid tennis all season and she had a very good weekend for us against Green Bay and Milwaukee," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "She is one of the players that I think can win at any position and we will be counting on her competitiveness down the stretch. She is playing very well with Nicole at No. 3 doubles and they had some pretty impressive 8-0 wins last weekend."

In a pair of 6-1 victories over Green Bay and Milwaukee, Sherwood was 2-0 at No. 3 singles and 2-0 at No. 3 doubles with teammate Nicole Janek. With the two wins last weekend, CSU improved to 12-7 on the season and 4-0 in the Horizon League, one of just two undefeated teams left.

In singles action the Mentor, Ohio native posted a 6-3, 6-1 win against the Panthers and cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory against the Phoenix. Entering the week Sherwood is on a three-match win streak and has won four out of her last five singles matches.

Sherwood and Janek dominated both of their doubles matches last weekend, posting 8-0 victories against Green Bay and Milwaukee. For the season the duo has a team-best 9 wins and is one of just two tandems to hold a 2-0 record in league contests.

Sherwood and the Vikings will continue league action this weekend, traveling to UIC and Valparaiso for two contests. CSU will face the Flames on Saturday, April 14 and the Crusaders on Sunday, April 15.
