INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Cleveland State junior Nicole Janek was once again named the Horizon League Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week Tuesday afternoon, earning the honor for the week of Monday, March 12 - Sunday, March 18. Janek led the Vikings with three singles wins and three doubles victories last week on their annual Spring Training Trip.

"Nicole has been a machine for us at the bottom part of our lineup," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Every time she is on the court she has a chance to win regardless of our opponent. She has been the strongest player on the team for the last few weeks and I am happy to see this success come her way. In part because of her accomplishments, the team has had great success so far this season and hopefully it will translate into the Horizon League portion of our schedule."

Janek, who has a league-leading 12 victories this spring, posted a 3-0 record in singles action last week, while she was also 3-for-3 in doubles play with teammate Maria Lazaris.

The Clarkston, Mich. native posted her first singles victory of the week against Embry-Riddle, a team that is ranked third in the NAIA standings. At No. 5 singles, she posted a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 victory. Janek then moved up to No. 4 singles for the next two matches, battling for a 7-5, 7-5 victory at Florida Atlantic and claiming a 6-1, 6-1 win against Albany.

Janek and Lazaris have won four out of their last five matches and are currently on a three-match win streak entering league play. Last week the duo posted an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles against Embry-Riddle, an 8-6 win at the No. 2 spot at Florida Atlantic and an 8-7 (7-3) victory against Albany also at No. 2 doubles.

Janek has won nine out of her last 10 singles matches, dropping the lone match of that streak at No. 66 Indiana. She is just three wins away from her first 20-win season, while she is also two wins shy of her 50th career victory.

Janek and the Vikings will open up the Horizon League portion of their schedule this weekend, as they travel to Detroit on Friday, March 23 for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
