Vikings Win Doubles, Lose Singles To Finish Ball State Invitational

MUNCIE, Ind. - Cleveland State went 2-0 in doubles play but lost six of seven singles matches on Saturday (Sept. 30) in the final day of the Ball State Invitational. Senior Sarah Galon lost two matches to finish fourth in Flight A while sophomore Kristin Chamberlain notched the team's only singles victory.

 

Galon and senior Morgan Ungerott won, 8-3, over Ball State's Pollack and Askerkow to finish the weekend 2-0. The duo is now 9-1 this season.

 

Chamberlain and freshman Charlotte Gibbons defeated IPFW's Coulson and Lish, also by an 8-3 score to give the Vikings the doubles sweep.

 

"Our doubles play was definitely our strong point today," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We won three out of four doubles matches for the weekend, so we're happy about that. We just wish we could have won more singles matches."

 

CSU finished the day 1-6 in singles play on the day, with Chamberlain picking up the team's only win, 6-0, 6-2 over Butler's Valerie Vinluan. She lost 6-4, 6-1 in her final match.

 

Galon lost twice to place fourth in Flight A, losing 6-1, 7-5 in her first match and then 3-6, 6-4 (10-8) in the consolation final. Ungerott also dropped two matches and Gibbons one in Flight C.

 

"We need to work on playing in tough situations," Etzkin said. "We had some close matches that we need to be able to win. Despite those losses, I think this was a good tournament for us."

 

The Viking women are idle until the ITA Regional Tournament starting Oct. 19 in East Lansing, Mich.
