PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Sarah Galon and Abby Showalter of the women's tennis team began their 2005 campaign playing some of the nation's top competition and fell in all six matches they took part in.

"We come here knowing these are some of the best players we will face all year," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Half the teams here are ranked in the top 70 and this experience will help us throughout the season."

Galon and Showalter began the day as a doubles pair and dropped their first match 8-4 and their second 8-3.

Galon, the reigning Horizon League Player of the Year, began singles play against Laura Peterzan of Harvard, who was ranked third in the entire tournament. Galon fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. She followed with a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Lauren Holtzberg from Penn State.

"Sarah played one of the top players in the country and that will only help her in the future," Etzkin said. "She will work on some of things and use this as a learning experience."

Showalter, competing in her first collegiate tournament, dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Caroline Stanislawski from Penn and a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Stephanie Schnitter from Harvard.

"It wasn't easy for Abby to come out here as a freshman and play this type of competition," Etzkin said. "She will be an impact player and an experience like this just helps her learn how to play at this level."

The tournament continues tomorrow where Galon and Showalter are guaranteed at least one more doubles match and singles contest for each of them.

"We are going to try and grab some wins tomorrow and finish strong," Etzkin said. "We have to keep our heads up and use this weekend to help us this season."

The tournament continues tomorrow with doubles in the morning and singles play will occur late in the afternoon.
