BOWLING GREEN - Two of Cleveland State's three doubles teams finished second in their flights and senior Sarah Galon placed third in the No. 1 singles draw at the Bowling Green Invitational, which concluded on Sunday.

Galon and fellow senior Morgan Ungerott were the runners-up in the top doubles bracket, defeating Mellion and Detroy of Dayton, 8-4, in the semis before falling in the final, 8-6, to UIC's Gill-Morlis and Smith. Junior Christine Vogelgesang and freshman Denisa Muntean teamed up to take second in the No. 3 doubles flight, winning 9-7 in the semi over Toledo's Azoway and Vandermolen but lost in the championship to Bowling Green's Menoff and Kintzel, 8-4.

Galon, who was 4-1 on the season entering Sunday, dominated in the top singles flight, defeating Jackie Villines of Xavier, 6-2, 6-2 for third place.

"We were really happy that we had two doubles teams make it to the finals, and Sarah also played very well at No. 1 singles," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "For us to do that well against that caliber of competition is very encouraging."

In the No. 2 doubles flight, sophomore Kristin Chamberlain and freshman Charlotte Gibbons split to matches, losing to the duo of Thayer and Fuleky from Youngstown State, 8-1, and then winning the seventh place match, 8-4, over Dayton's Gray and Dzubay.

Muntean, Ungerott and Gibbons won their matches in the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 spots, respectively. Muntean's 6-4, 6-1 win over Jenna Nussbaum of Bowling Green captured seventh place in the No. 2 flight. Ungerott and Gibbons both placed fifth in the third and fourth spots, with Ungerott winning 7-6 (0), 6-4, and Gibbons winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Vogelgesang lost a three-set thriller, 6-4, 1-6 (12-10) to Nikki Dzubay of Dayton, to finish eighth in the No. 5 singles flight. Chamberlain fell in straight sets to Akron's Alyssa Carlson, 6-4, 6-4 to place fourth at the No. 6 spot.

"I was happy with how we played as a team," Etzkin said. "We got a lot of key wins, and competing against some league teams gave us a good idea of where we are. We just need to keep improving. We're right there, knocking on the door."
