AKRON, Ohio - The Viking women's tennis team completed a successful first weekend of play Saturday at the Zips Invite in Akron. CSU won the back draw of all three flights and finished Saturday with an individual 4-2 singles record and 3-2 in doubles play.

Kristin Chamberlain, who went 2-0 on Friday, lost in her quest to capture the "B" Flight titles in the semifinals to Lindsey Berry from Akron, 6-0, 6-1. On the back end of the bracket in the "A" Flight, Jenn Myers defeated Tanya Gombera of Akron to move into the finals where she faced teammate Morgan Ungerott. Ungerott defeated Alyssa Carlson, who was also from Akron, 6-1, 6-2. Myers went on to defeat Ungerott in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.

"I was happy to see both Jenn and Morgran make it to the back draw finals of their flight," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "They both worked really hard after the first day to get where they were."

Christine Vogelgesang, who earned a berth to the back draw finals on Friday, met Laura Hemlepp from Akron, and defeated her in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 to win the back draw of the "B" Flight.

"Christine showed a great effort in her last match after dropping the second set," Etzkin said. "I was glad that our ladies got some wins under their belt."

In doubles play, it was an all Viking final in the back draw of the doubles bracket. Ungerott and Lindsay Sellers met up with Myers and Vogelgesang. Ungerott and Chamberlain emerged victorious, 8-4.

"All in all I was happy with the way the team played minus Sarah [Galon] and Abby [Showalter]," Etzkin said. "We have some things to work on, but it was good to get out on the courts against outside competition."

The Vikings will be in action next weekend, when Sarah Galon and Abby Showalter go to the University of Pennsylvania Invitational on Friday, Sept. 23 at 2:00 p.m.
