AKRON, Ohio - Freshman Kristin Chamberlain made the most of her collegiate debut on Friday, going 2-0 for the Viking women's tennis team at the opening day of the Zips Invitational. Playing without their top two players, who will travel next week to the competitive University of Pennsylvania Invite, the Vikings individually went 5-6 in singles play, and just 1-3 in doubles.

Chamberlain opened up play against Wright State's Jessica Morris and beat her in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 for her first career victory. Chamberlain then went on to face Laura Hemlepp from Akron and defeated her 6-3, 7-5.

"I was extremely happy with the way Kristin played at her first collegiate competition," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "With our top two players out, some of our players played a little out of position."

Jenn Myers, Lindsay Sellers, and Christine Vogelgesang all finished the first day 1-1. Myers fell in her first match of the day to Tiffani Foster of Wright State, 6-4, 6-1. She came back to take a straight-set match from Kerry Langworthy, 6-3, 6-0.

Christine Vogelgesang also dropped her first match of the day, but came back to beat teammate Marcella Capozziello, 6-2, 6-1.

"I think for the first tournament we saw some good things out of our players, but we still need to work on some things," Etzkin said. "It will be nice to get back out there tomorrow and try and produce."

On the doubles side, Chamberlain teamed up with Morgan Ungerott to pick up the only doubles victory on the day. They defeated the duo of Jenna Larson and Amy Sherlock, 8-5. With they victory they advance to play their fellow Vikings, Vogelgesang and Cappoziello on Saturday.

The Vikings will continue with the second and final day of the Zips Invitational tomorrow, Sept. 17, with play beginning at 9:00 a.m.
