CLEVELAND, Ohio - With a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles, Nicole Janek posted the 50th victory of her career, leading the Cleveland State women's tennis team to a 6-1 victory over Green Bay Friday evening. The win extends CSU's win streak to four straight, while the Vikings improve to 11-7 overall and 3-0 in the Horizon League.
"We came out strong and took care of business tonight, starting out with strong doubles play," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We played very aggressive in the doubles matches and it was good to come away with the first point of the night. Our No. 1 doubles team struggled at the beginning, but they were able to come from behind and get the win. Today's match was really about focusing on what we had to do on the courts and staying competitive throughout the entire contest."
The Vikings swept the doubles matches, starting with an 8-0 win at the No. 3 position by Janek and Kara Sherwood. The No. 2 doubles team of Alex Power and Alex Bush claimed an 8-1 victory, while Catrine Bjerrehus and Maria Lazaris earned an 8-4 win at the No. 1 position.
In singles play, Cleveland State was able to knock off five straight wins at the No. 1, 6, 3, 2 and 5 spots. Janek, who became the second Viking to notch her 50th career win this season (Maria Lazaris), picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles, marking her fifth win out of her last six matches. Power also reached a milestone in Friday's contest, picking up her 20th win of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 6 spot. Power is the first Viking to notch 20 wins this season and the 10th all-time.
With a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles against Green Bay, Sherwood notched her third win out of her last four matches and now stands at 9-9 this spring. Bjerrehus cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, while Lazaris earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 spot.
"Nicole played a very strong match today to pick up her 50th career win and we are all very happy for her," Etzkin said. "It was also great to see Alex Bush back in the lineup after having to sit out with some injuries. Today's win really sets up a good match for tomorrow with Milwaukee between two undefeated teams in the league, and we are excited to finally play outside at home."
The Vikings return to action tomorrow (Saturday, April 7) when they host Milwaukee at 1:00 p.m. at the Malaga Tennis Center on the CSU campus.
