Vikings Drop 4-3 Contest At Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Cleveland State women's tennis team swept the doubles matches for the fourth time this season on Wednesday afternoon, but the Vikings came up just short as they fell at Florida Atlantic, 4-3. The loss drops CSU to 7-7 on the year, while FAU improves to 8-4.

The Vikings came out strong against the Owls, taking all three doubles matches to earn the first point of the contest. At No. 1 doubles, Catrine Bjerrehus and Alex Power collected an 8-7 (4) victory, while Nicole Janek and Maria Lazaris posted an 8-6 win at the No. 2 spot and Mengdi Liu and Kara Sherwood claimed an 8-6 (6) win at No. 3 doubles.

CSU was only able to post two singles victories against Florida Atlantic, as Janek posted one at No. 4 singles and Liu posted one at the No. 6 spot. Janek, who has a team-best 11-3 record this spring, battled for a 7-5, 7-5 victory over FAU's Cassie Bergeson. Liu extended her singles win streak to four matches Wednesday, as she picked up a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Natalia Tomaszewicz.

The Vikings came up just short in the other four singles matches, including Power, who dropped a three-set decision at the No. 5 spot (6-4, 4-6, 6-0). Bjerrehus gave the Owls all they could handle at No. 1 singles, dropping a close 6-4, 7-5 match, while Sherwood came up short in a 6-4, 6-4 decision at the No. 3 spot.

Cleveland State will close out its spring training trip tomorrow (Thursday, March 15) when they face Albany at 2:00 p.m.
