Milwaukee, Wis. - The women's tennis team picked up a strong 6-1 victory over UW-Milwaukee on Saturday (Feb. 26) night to move to 2-0 in Horizon League play.
The Vikings got a quick doubles point, with Sarah Galon and Morgan Ungerott dispatching the Panthers in an 8-1 match, while Jenn Myers and Christine Vogelgesang scoring an 8-3 win at No. 2. Lindsay Sellers and Marcella Capozziello followed with a hard fought 8-5 win.
Ungerott got things rolling in the singles competition with a quick 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3, followed by Lindsay Sellers battling for a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win at No. 4.
Galon would seal the win for CSU with a three-set match at No. 1, claiming a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory.
"I needed to boost my confidence and go out and keep battling," Galon said. "I could see that Jenn [Myers] was playing a tough match, so I knew I had to keep playing hard to get the team win. We learned from Green Bay match that just because you win doubles point doesn't mean you win the match."
"This was a total team victory," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "They didn't stop fighting. They came out and played hard the whole way through. But we had to have confidence to win those three-set tiebreakers. It's all about believing you can win when the points get tight."
The Vikings return home briefly on Friday (March 5) when they host Chicago State at the River Oaks Racquet Club in Rocky River beginning at 6:00 p.m.
