Cleveland State Women’s Tennis Picks Up 4-3 Win At Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's tennis team remained perfect on the spring season Sunday, earning a 4-3 victory at Dayton to improve to 3-0 on the year.

"This was a great match today! We started a little slow in doubles, but we battled back to pick up the early lead and then carried that momentum into the start of singles play," head coach Frank Polito said. "We were able to pick up four first sets in singles, but give Dayton credit because they battled back to force three third-sets. We are now looking forward to opening our home slate next weekend!"

Cleveland State remained perfect this season in doubles points, earning wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to get the early 1-0 lead. Bethany Yauch and Sima Heren earned a 6-4 win at the top spot, while Tereze Vevere and Ella Franz earned a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles. At the top spot, Yauch and Heren battled back from being down 0-3 to get the win and clinch the doubles point for the Vikings.

The Vikings then extended their lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 7-5 win from Vevere at No. 4 singles, while a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory from Heren at the No. 3 spot put the Vikings up 3-0 to begin singles play.

Dayton responded with a pair of wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, before Oihane Vicario clinched the match for Cleveland State with a 6-7(5), 7-5, 7-5 come-from-behind win at the top of the lineup. Vicario, who is perfect on the spring season, battled back from a 3-5 deficit in the second set, before also coming back from down 2-5 in the third set to keep the Vikings perfect this spring.

The Flyers then put the final point on the board with a win at No. 6 singles, to put the final score at 4-3 Cleveland State.

In addition to Vicario, Heren and Vevere are also undefeated at 3-0 during dual match play.

Cleveland State will continue the spring slate with two matches next weekend, hosting Toledo on Friday, February 2 in its home opener and traveling to Eastern Michigan on Sunday, February 4.
