Vicario Records 50th Singles Win As Vikings Pick Up 6-1 Victory At Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Cleveland State women's tennis team picked up its second victory of the spring season Saturday, earning a 6-1 win at Ball State.

"This was a great team match for us today, we battled throughout the doubles and singles lineup," head coach Frank Polito said. "After picking up a hard-fought doubles point, Ella and Filippa set the tone in singles to give us a big lead, while Tereze came through with a nice straight-set win to clinch the match."

For the second straight match the Vikings were able to earn the doubles point against Ball State, picking up wins at the top two spots. Bethany Yauch/Sima Heren and Oihane Vicario/Filippa Frogner picked up matching 6-4 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively, with Vicario and Frogner improving to 2-0 this spring.

Cleveland State quickly added to its lead with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles from Ella Franz, while Filippa Frogner put the Vikings up 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 straight-set win at the No. 6 spot.

Tereze Vevere then clinched the match for the Vikings at No. 4 singles, picking up a 6-2, 6-4 victory, before Vicario added another win with a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0(3) come-from-behind win at the top of the lineup.

With her win at No. 1 singles, Vicario recorded the 50th singles win of her Cleveland State career.

Cleveland State's final point of the day came from Heren at No. 3 singles, as she earned a 6-1, 7-6(3), 1-0(12) victory to give the Vikings the 6-1 win over Ball State.

"Oihane and Sima both did a great job of staying in their matches to pick up wins, including Sima saving numerous match points in her third set tiebreaker. It will be a quick turnaround for us, as we head to Dayton for an early morning match tomorrow," Polito added.

The Vikings will continue the second weekend of play tomorrow (Sunday, January 28), traveling to Dayton for a 10:00 a.m. contest.
