Women’s Tennis Has Strong Showing On Final Day of Akron Shootout

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team closed out play at the Akron Shootout Sunday, picking up four singles wins and two doubles wins on the final day of action.

"This was another strong day for us today, and it's always nice to finish the last day of a tournament playing our best tennis," head coach Frank Polito said. "I thought we played really well in singles on all courts, and had a lot of fight throughout the entire day. The highlight for us in singles was Klara battling for a hard fought win after staying mentally tough throughout her match."

Mrcela capped off her 3-0 weekend with a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0(5) win over Binghamton's Samara Eisenberg, finishing the weekend with a 5-3 overall record this fall.

The Vikings also got singles wins from Schoenberg, Avram and Lenoan on the final day of the Akron Shootout, with all three posting 2-1 records on the weekend.

Schoenberg posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Regina Furer of Binghamton, while Avram earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Binghamton's Julia Gumieniak and Lenoan notched a 6-0, 6-0 win over Liana Weitzman of Binghamton. Lenoan's straight-set win marked her fifth victory of the fall season, as she finished the weekend with a 5-3 singles record this year.

"I also thought we played well in doubles today, especially Klara/Lara and Blanche/Lauren who were able to earn some big leads and then took care of business as they closed out their matches. Overall this was a good weekend for us, and we are looking forward to closing out the fall season next weekend," Polito said.

In doubles action, the Vikings went 2-1 on Sunday, as the doubles teams of Klara Mrcela/Lara Prosenjak and Blanche Lenoan/Lauren Longo both picked up 6-2 victories against Akron. Mrcela and Prosenjak improved to 4-2 this fall, after finishing with a 2-1 record on the weekend.

Cleveland State will close out the fall portion of its 2019-20 schedule next weekend, taking part in the UB Fall Invite Friday, November 1 – Sunday, November 3.
