Women’s Tennis Has Strong Doubles Play On Day One Of Akron Shootout

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team began play at the Akron Shootout Friday, as the Vikings swept their doubles matches and split their singles contests.

"I thought it was another great day in doubles for us, we came out with a game plan and played really well on all three courts," head coach Frank Polito said. "It was great to see Lauren back on the court today, she played well in singles and doubles despite coming off an injury. We also had some strong performances from Klara, Kate and Gaby, and hopefully we can continue this tomorrow and have another strong day on the courts."

The Vikings swept their doubles matches on Friday, picking up three wins against Binghamton. Klara Mrcela and Lara Prosenjak earned a 6-3 victory in their match, improving to 3-1 over the last two tournaments.

Gaby Schoenberg and Kateryna Avram posted a 6-4 win on their court, while Blanche Lenoan and Lauren Longo earned a 6-2 victory.

Cleveland State split its singles matches to begin the Akron Shootout, as Mrcela, Avram and Schoenberg all picked up wins against Youngstown State. All three notched their third singles wins of the year, which is tied for the team lead.

Mrcela earned a 6-3 ,6-4 win over Imaan Hassim, while Avram posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Lucia Zagar and Schoenberg notched a 7-6(3), 6-0 victory against Cassandra Moraleja.

Action at the Akron Shootout will continue tomorrow (Saturday, October 26) with one round of singles and one round of doubles beginning at 10:00 a.m.
