Women’s Tennis Sweeps #HLWTEN Weekly Awards

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For the second time this season the Cleveland State women's tennis team has been honored by the Horizon League, as the Vikings have swept the #HLWTEN weekly honors. Isabella Spindler was named the Singles Player of the Week, while Spindler and Klara Mrcela were named the Doubles Team of the Week.

Last week, Spindler and Mrcela helped the Vikings post a 4-0 victory at Kennesaw State, closing out their annual Spring Break Trip to the state of Georgia. The 4-0 win marked the fifth shutout of the year for Cleveland State, while it also marked the fifth win out of the last seven matches for the Vikings.

"I'm very excited for Isabella and Klara to both be recognized by the Horizon League, they have been putting in some great work in practice and in matches over the last few weeks and this is well deserving for both," head coach Frank Polito said. "We have really been focusing on our doubles play over the last few weeks of practice and to see the results on the court is great. This is a great honor to build on heading into league play this weekend"

Playing at the top of the singles lineup, Spindler picked up a 6-4, 6-1 victory against the Owls, posting her fifth win of the spring season. The straight-set victory at Kennesaw State marked the 52nd win of her career, as she now ranks 14th on the CSU Singles Wins List.

In doubles action, Spindler and Mrcela teamed up for the first time this year at Kennesaw State, earning a 6-1 victory at the top of the doubles lineup. The duo helped the Vikings pick up the early 1-0 advantage against the Owls, marking the seventh time this season that Cleveland State has captured the doubles point.

With the win, Spindler notched her 59th career doubles win and ranks ninth on the CSU Doubles Wins List. She is just one win shy of becoming the ninth Viking all-time with 60+ doubles wins.

The Vikings will begin Horizon League play this weekend, traveling to Milwaukee (Saturday, March 23) and Green Bay (Sunday, March 24).
