Women’s Tennis Sweeps #HLWTEN Weekly Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio – After picking up back-to-back wins over Wright State and Northern Kentucky last weekend, the Cleveland State women's tennis team has swept the Horizon League weekly awards, as Isabella Spindler has been named the Singles Player of the Week and Jana Schober and Gaby Schoenberg earned Doubles Team of the Week honors.

This marks the second time this season that Spindler has picked up Singles Player of the Week accolades, while it is the third time for a Cleveland State doubles team to be honored.

Last weekend, the Vikings defeated Wright State (4-3) and Northern Kentucky (6-1), improving to 6-1 in Horizon League play. Entering the final week of the regular season, Cleveland State is currently tied for second place in the league standings.

Spindler went 2-0 at No. 1 singles on the weekend, picking up a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Wright State's Karoline Haller and a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 victory over Northern Kentucky's Margita Sunjic – the reigning Horizon League Player of the Year.

"This is a well deserved honor for Isabella, she had a great weekend for us last time out, beating two players that are tough matchups for her, including the reigning Horizon League Player of the Year," associate head coach Frank Polito said. "Isabella has been working really hard on her mental toughness, and she had a great mindset throughout both of her singles matches last weekend, which I believe was a major part of her success."

With the two wins last weekend, Spindler has now won seven of her last eight matches, and owns a team-best 18-12 record on the year. This spring, Spindler stands at 12-8, including a 6-1 mark against league opponents.

In doubles action, Schober and Schoenberg went 2-0 at No. 2 doubles, helping Cleveland State pick up the crucial doubles point in both matches last weekend. The duo notched a 6-2 win against Wright State and followed that up with a 6-2 victory against Northern Kentucky.

"For Jana and Gaby to earn this honor is just awesome – especially for Jana to be honored following our senior weekend festivities," Polito said. "Jana and Gaby are two of the hardest workers on the team, and for them to be put in the lineup as a doubles team for the first time this spring and pick up two wins is a testament to their hard work and dedication."

Schober and Schoenberg, who were playing as a doubles team for the first time this spring, stand at 5-4 overall this year and 2-0 during dual match play.

The Vikings will close out the regular season with a pair of crucial road matches this weekend, traveling to IUPUI on Saturday, April 21 and UIC on Sunday, April 22.
