Vikings Sweep Valparaiso To Continue Horizon League Play

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team improved to 2-0 in Horizon League play Sunday afternoon, as the Vikings picked up a 7-0 sweep over Valparaiso.

"This was a good ,solid win for us today, and it's great to start league play with a 2-0 record after the opening weekend of play," associate head coach Frank Polito said. "We have a tough roadtrip next weekend, and we are looking forward to spending the week preparing for those matches and hopefully continuing our strong play that we showed this weekend."

The Vikings got off to a quick start, picking up the doubles point with convincing 6-1 victories at the No. 2 spot from Isabella Spindler and Princess Gbadamosi and at the No. 3 spot from Aleksandra Golawska and Blanche Lenoan.

Lenoan was then the first Viking to get on the board during singles play, picking up a 6-3, 6-0 victory at the bottom of the lineup. Lenoan is now 8-8 this spring, including a 2-0 mark in Horizon League play.

The next singles win came from Golawska at No. 3 singles, with the junior improving to 13-10 this year, including a 6-6 record this spring. The win also marked the 47th win of her career, as she is now just three wins shy of becoming the 14th Viking all-time to eclipse the 50-win milestone.

The clinching point came from Jana Schober at No. 5 singles then, as she posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory for her eighth singles win this spring.

Schober's victory was quickly followed by a win at No. 4 singles from Gbadamosi, who tallied a 6-3, 6-1 victory. The win marked Gbadamosi's 64th career victory, and kept the senior perfect in league play this season.

The final two points of the match came at the top two singles spots, with Spindler earning a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles and Victoria Bensimon posting a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot. Bensimon now has a team-best 15 singles wins this season, and has 69 wins on her career. With just one more win, Bensimon would become the seventh Viking all-time to reach the 70-win mark.

After picking up a victory at No. 2 singles against Valparaiso, Bensimon also improved to 23-2 against league opponents in regular season matches, and is currently on a 15-match winstreak in league play.

The Vikings will continue Horizon League play on the road next weekend, traveling to Northern Kentucky (Saturday, April 1) and Wright State (Sunday, April 2).
