Vikings Drop Close Match To Duquesne, 4-3

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team continued its opening weekend of spring play Saturday afternoon, falling to Duquesne, 4-3 in a hard-fought contest.

"Today was a close match for us against Duquesne, I thought we came out with great effort and I thought we competed really hard, but we just weren't able to came away with the victory," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "I thought we played some good doubles today, but Duquesne was the more aggressive doubles team and they came out on a mission and picked up the early point. After Duquesne was able to pick up two singles wins, I thought the momentum shifted in our favor when we were able to pick up first set wins on the four remaining courts – but we were only able to pick up wins on three courts, as Mathilde, Isabella, and Aleksandra closed out their matches. Moving forward we know what we need to work on, and will be working hard over the next week as we continue the spring season."

Cleveland State's three points on the night came during singles play, as the Vikings picked up wins at the No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 spots.

Mathilde Orange picked up her first win of the spring season at No. 3 singles, posting a 6-3, 6-7 (8), 10-6 victory over Maddy Adams. Orange now has 45 career singles wins, just five wins shy of becoming the 12th Viking all-time to record 50 career singles wins.

Isabella Spindler remained undefeated in collegiate singles play, earning a 7-5, 4-6, 10-4 win over Alexa Miller at the No. 4 spot. Spindler picked up her first collegiate win last night against Toledo.

Cleveland State's final singles win came from Aleksandra Golawska at No. 6 singles, as she posted a 6-1, 6-7 (6), 10-8 victory over Megan Wasson, earning her first win of the spring season.

The Vikings will return to the court next weekend, as Cleveland State will travel to West Virginia for a 4:00 p.m. match on Friday, January 29.
