Orange Advances To Qualifying Finals At ITA Midwest Regional

UPDATED QUALIFYING SINGLES DRAW

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened play at the ITA Midwest Regional Thursday, with Mathilde Orange advancing to the finals of the qualifying singles draw.

"I'm so pumped for how well Mathilde played today, picking up two wins over quality opponents from Akron and UIC to advance to the qualifying finals," associate head coach Frank Polito said. "Mathilde played some solid tennis from start to finish today, and hopefully she can continue that tomorrow to become our first-ever qualifying singles player. Along with Mathilde, we were also able to get some good consolation wins from Morgan and Princess, and will look to continue this strong play tomorrow with the start of doubles action"

Orange, who is one of 16 players left in the qualifying singles draw, picked up two wins over opponents from Akron and UIC during the first day of play. In the first round, Orange posted a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Akron's Karalina Maksimava, and then followed that up with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 win over UIC's Melika Leblanc in the round of 32.

Orange will now face Athena Truilloit from Michigan State at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, with the winner earning one of eight qualifying spots in the main singles draw at the ITA Midwest Regional.

Also competing for the Vikings in qualifying singles action were Morgan Nix, Princess Gbadamosi, and Victoria Bensimon. After dropping their opening round contests, this trio played a round of consolation matches, with Nix and Gbadamosi coming away victorious.

Action at the ITA Midwest Regional will continue tomorrow (Friday, October 23), with the final round of qualifying singles matches beginning at 9:00 a.m. followed by two rounds of the main doubles draw beginning at 2:00 p.m.
