Folkers Notches 20th Win As Vikings Take Down Valparaiso

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team started Banquet Weekend off the right way Saturday afternoon, capturing a 7-0 sweep over Valparaiso. The sweep, which marked the third of the season for the Vikings, improves CSU's Horizon League record to 4-3 with just one match left in regular season play.

"This was a great team win for the women, compliments to Valparaiso on becoming more and more competitive each year – they definitely pushed us on some of the singles courts and definitely came to play today," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "I thought we played really crisp doubles at No. 2 and No. 3 – which is something that we have been working hard at in practice – so it's good to see it paying off. Princess was able to get a great win on her birthday, and Aleksandra battled some nerves to pull out a three-set win to highlight the match for us."

The Vikings were able to get off to a quick 1-0 start in doubles play, picking up matching 6-0 victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. At No. 2 doubles, Aleksandra Golawska and Jana Schober picked up CSU's first doubles win, while Princess Gbadamosi and Mathilde Orange quickly followed with their win at the No.3  spot.

Cleveland State was then able to pick up all six singles wins – five of which came in straight sets. Orange gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the top of the lineup, while Gbadamosi notched a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles to put the score at 3-0.

Schober then clinched the match for the Vikings with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles.

Victoria Bensimon was able to extend her singles winstreak to four straight Saturday afternoon, giving the Vikings their fifth point of the day with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles. Ellen Folkers then notched her 20th win of the season at the No. 2 spot, picking up a 6-2, 6-4 win. This marks the first 20-win season for Folkers and she is also the first Viking to reach 20 wins this season.

The final match of the day was No. 4 singles, where Golawska was able to keep her record perfect against league opponents, earning a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 victory. Golawska, who is 7-0 in league singles play, has now won eight straight singles matches and stands at 16-10 overall this season.

The Vikings will close out regular season play tomorrow (Sunday, April 19), hosting UIC at 11:00 a.m. The match will be played at Paramount Tennis Club in Westlake, Ohio – but for those fans that are unable to attend there will be Live Scoring available via the women's tennis schedule page on CSUVikings.com.
