Women’s Tennis Falls At Milwaukee, 4-3

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team closed out its final roadswing of the regular season Sunday afternoon, dropping a 4-3 contest at Milwaukee.

"Today's match was a repeat of last year when we played them at home, just the opposite result for us. We definitely left it all on the courts today, but Milwaukee was the better team," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Doubles was very competitive today – with both teams playing good doubles. Despite our hard fight in doubles action, we got behind early and then dropped a couple quick singles matches before making our comeback."

After getting behind 1-0 after dropping the doubles point, Cleveland State then found itself with a 3-0 deficit after falling at No. 5 and No. 6 singles before knocking off three straight singles wins to even the match at 3-3.

CSU's first point on the day came from Victoria Bensimon at No. 3 singles, as she earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory improving to 17-12 overall this season. Bensimon is also now 4-2 in league play, and has won three straight singles matches.

Ellen Folkers then followed up Bensimon's victory with a singles win of her own at the No. 2 spot, picking up her team-leading 19th victory of the season with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) decision. Folkers, who is 11-8 this spring, is also 4-2 in Horizon League play.

Cleveland State's final point came from Aleksandra Golawska at No. 4 singles, as she extended her singles winstreak to seven with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory. Golawska also kept her league record perfect on the season, as she finished the weekend owning a 6-0 mark against Horizon League opponents.

With the match tied at 3-3, the No. 1 singles contest between Cleveland State's Mathilde Orange and Milwaukee's Chelsea Bailey was the final match on the courts and the deciding point on the day. After dropping the first set (6-3), Orange bounced back to pick up a matching 6-3 victory in the second frame, forcing a third and final set – which she eventually dropped, 7-5.

"Victoria was able to get us a quick point at No. 3 singles to help swing the momentum, and then Ellen and Aleksandra continued their strong play in singles to even the match at 3-3. Mathilde was in the final match once again, but didn't quite get the result she wanted. Mathilde was definitely focused on what she needed to do, but just came up a bit short in the end," Etzkin said.

The Vikings will wrap up the regular season at home next weekend, hosting Valparaiso (Saturday, April 18) and UIC (Sunday, April 19).
