Women’s Tennis Picks Up 7-0 Sweep Of Hawaii Hilo

LAIE, Hawaii – The Cleveland State women's tennis team picked up its first 7-0 sweep of the season Monday afternoon, defeating Hawaii Hilo.

"We played singles first today, which is a little different than what we are used to, but I thought the team responded well and fought hard for the victory today," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We had some tough moments figuring out the wind, but once we were able to find a strategy that worked for us, we were able to regroup and play some solid tennis. We also played some good, aggressive doubles today, and we were able to work on some things that we have been focusing on in practice. With this win we were definitely able to take a step forward, and get a good team win."

Due to court limitations, the two teams played singles first, as Cleveland State was able to make quick work on all six courts, recording straight-set victories at all six spots.

Ellen Folkers extended her singles winstreak to six straight matches Monday afternoon, earning a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles. Folkers now has a team-best 15-4 overall record this season, including a 7-3 mark this spring.

Princess Gbadamosi and Aleksandra Golawska were also able to extend their winstreaks, picking up wins at No. 5 singles and No. 6 singles, respectively. Gbadamosi posted a 6-1, 7-6 (0) victory to improve her season record to 10-9, while Golawska earned a 6-0, 6-0 win.

Victoria Bensimon and Mathilde Orange were able to sweep the top of the singles lineup, Bensimon with a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 1 singles, and Orange with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the No. 2 spot. The final singles victory of the day came from Jana Schober, who captured a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles.

Cleveland State was also able to quickly sweep the doubles matches, with Bensimon and Folkers posting a 6-2 victory at the top of the lineup, and Orange/Gbadamosi and Schober/Golawska earning 6-1 victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 sports, respectively.

The Vikings will now take a couple days off from competition, and will face BYU Hawaii on Thursday, March 12. Remember to check out the Cleveland State Tennis Blog to stay up-to-date on the Vikings' Spring Break Trip to Hawaii.
