Folkers Picks Up Singles Win As Vikings Fall To Ball State, 6-1

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Despite picking up their first win of the season on Friday, the Cleveland State women's tennis team couldn't stay on the winning track, as the Vikings dropped a 6-1 contest to Ball State Sunday afternoon.

"We had multiple chances throughout the match today to swing things in our favor, but we just couldn't capitalize on those moments. Ball State played very well, but I thought our team fought hard and left everything on the court," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We played with some new doubles teams today and they were still getting comfortable with each other, but towards the end they were getting better – just not in time to get the doubles point."

Cleveland State's lone point came from Ellen Folkers at No. 3 singles, as she picked up her third straight win in a 6-3, 6-1 decision. Folkers now has a team-best 12-4 record this season, including a 4-3 mark this spring.

Victoria Bensimon, Jana Schober, and Princess Gbadamosi all dropped three-set matches against Ball State, giving their opponents all they could handle at No. 1, No. 4, and No. 5 singles, respectively. Bensimon came up just short in a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 decision, while Schober fell 6-0, 3-6, 6-4, and Gbadamosi dropped a 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 decision.

"Ellen has been playing her best tennis this year, and she moved up another spot in the lineup and she rose to the occasion today. I hope she continues to play well and keeps things rolling for the team. Now we will regroup and focus our attention to next Friday's match at Akron," Etzkin said.

The Vikings will return to action on Friday, Feb. 20, traveling to Akron for a 2:00 p.m. match.
