Vikings Fall To Nationally Ranked Michigan State, 5-2

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team put up a good fight, but came up short against No. 75 Michigan State, 5-2 Saturday afternoon. Saturday's contest marked the third straight match against a nationally ranked team for the Vikings.

"I thought everyone showed a lot of fight and energy today, and I really think they left it all on the court," associate head coach Frank Polito said. "This was our third straight contest against a nationally ranked team, and we were able to battle and hang with them in multiple matches. Once again, facing these tough opponents during our non-league schedule can only help us later on in the season."

Although the Spartans were able to pick up the doubles point, Cleveland State was able to post its first doubles victory of the spring season at the top of the lineup. The duo of Victoria Bensimon and Jana Schober posted a 6-4 victory against Michigan State, improving their record to 1-2 this spring and 3-3 overall.

The Spartans, who went into singles play with a 1-0 lead, were able to clinch the match with a quick victory at No. 3 singles, followed by wins at the No. 6 and No. 1 spots.

After the match was decided, Bensimon and Princess Gbadamosi were able to pick up singles wins, giving the Vikings two points on the night. Bensimon picked up her win in a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 decision at No. 2 singles, while Gbadamosi's victory came at No. 5 singles (6-4, 6-4).

Bensimon is now tied for the team lead with nine singles wins on the year, while she is also tied with Gbadamosi with a team-best two singles victories during the spring.

The Vikings will return to action tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 8), traveling to Toledo for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
