BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened play at the UB Fall Invitational Friday afternoon, posting a 2-0 doubles record and a 4-2 singles record on the first day of action.

"Overall this was a solid first day for us, we were able to put three teams into the semifinals of the doubles brackets, and posted a winning record in singles," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Hopefully tomorrow we will be able to do some damage in doubles play and continue our winning ways. In singles, everyone played hard throughout their matches, and it was good to see us get victories in the three-set matches. Ellen was down in her third set, but came back to win 7-6, which was a great mental effort on her part. Victoria also posted a three-set win for us – focusing on the job at hand throughout her entire match. The weather wasn't ideal for tennis today, but we were all able to concentrate and put our best effort on the courts, and I am looking forward to that continuing tomorrow."

In doubles play, the Vikings were able to post victories in both the Flight A and Flight B brackets. Mathilde Orange and Princess Gbadamosi were able to earn an 8-5 victory over Niagara in Flight A, while Aleksandra Golawska and Ellen Folkers earned an 8-3 victory over Niagara in Flight B.

Mathilde Orange picked up Cleveland State's victory in the Flight A Singles bracket, earning a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Niagara's Ashley Ta.

In Flight B Singles action, Victoria Bensimon was able to advance to the semifinals with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 victory over Niagara's Maria Ortiz.

Both Vikings in the Singles C Flight picked up victories in the opening round, as Ellen Folkers earned a 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (2) victory against Iva Celan of Niagara, and Aleksandra Golawska posted a 6-2, 6-2 win against Paulina Tafler of Binghamton.

Action at the UB Fall Invitational will continue tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 11) with one round of singles and two rounds of doubles set to start at 12:00 p.m.
