Vikings Have Excellent Showing On First Day Of WVU Invite

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team had an excellent opening day at the West Virginia Pink Invitational Friday, winning nine out of their 10 matches, including all three doubles matches.

"We had a great day today, everyone played very well in both singles and doubles," associate head coach Frank Polito said. "They competed really hard against Buffalo in singles play, coming away with six of the seven matches, and then carried that momentum into the doubles matches against IU-Pennsylvania. Overall it was a solid performance and they are excited to get back to action tomorrow."

The Vikings started the day by picking up six out of seven singles matches, including a sweep over opponents from the University at Buffalo. Lauren Golick, Mathilde Orange and Jana Schober played at the top half of the lineup for CSU - Golick picking up a 6-3, 6-0 victory, Orange earning a 6-3, 6-7(0), 6-4 victory, and Schober posting a 6-4, 6-3 win.

Cleveland State's other three singles wins came from Victoria Bensimon (6-2, 6-4), Ellen Folkers (4-6, 6-2, 6-1), and Princess Gbadamosi (6-1, 6-2).

In doubles action, the Vikings went 3-0 against Indiana University of Pennsylvania. At the top spot, Ellen Folkers and Jana Schober recorded a 6-4 victory, while Lauren Golick and Princess Gbadamosi picked up a 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot, and Mathilde Orange and Aleksandra Golawska earned a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles.

The Vikings will continue play at the West Virginia Pink Invitational tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 27), with one round of singles and two rounds of doubles.
