PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Cleveland State women's tennis team was able to extend its win streak to four Saturday afternoon, picking up a 6-1 victory at Duquesne. The win improves the Vikings to 5-5 on the season.
"We played great doubles again today and we are really starting to come together and play to our strengths during doubles action," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Everyone was very focused throughout their singles matches and we really had to fight to pull out every win. I like where the team is at heading into our Florida roadswing, and hopefully we can continue to grow throughout that trip when we finally play outside for the first time this season."
For the third straight match CSU was able to get out to an early 1-0 lead, sweeping the doubles matches against Duquesne. At No. 1 doubles Alex Bush and Kara Sherwood earned an 8-7 (9) victory, while Alex Power andMaria Lazaris picked up an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles and Mathilde Orange and Ellen Folkers marked an 8-4 victory at the No. 3 spot.
The Vikings kept their momentum going throughout singles play, claiming victories in five of the six matches. Nicole Janek posted her third straight singles win at the No. 6 spot, earning a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 come from behind victory. Power and Sherwood each marked their second straight singles wins, Power at No. 3 singles (2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4)) and Sherwood at No. 4 singles (6-3, 6-1).
The final two singles wins for Cleveland State came from Orange at the No. 1 spot (6-4, 1-6, 6-3) and Bush at the No. 2 spot (6-4, 6-4).
Next up for the Vikings will be a three-match roadswing in Florida, beginning with a match at Florida Atlantic on Saturday, March 9.
