Jones Recieves League Swimmer of the Week Honors

Nov. 9, 2004

After swimming to three wins against Yougnstown State and St. Bonaventure last weekend, senior Samantha Jones has been named the Horizon Leauge Women's Swimmer of the Week, the league announced today.

Jones swam to a win in the 200 backstroke against St. Bonaventure (Nov. 6), completing the trip in 2:06.98. She recorded a second-place showing in the 1,000 freestyle (10:52.34) and led off the 400 medley relay with a 100 backstroke time of 57.90, nearly breaking her school record time 57.48.

Against Youngstown State (Nov. 5), she won both the 200 IM (2:12.19) and 200 back (2:10.67).

"I thought Sam has swum exceptionally well all year," head coach Mike Lehto said. "It's good to see her get recognized for her accomplishments. She has been as fast as ever in every meet so far this year, whereas, in past seasons, she usually swims her best towards the end of the year. It's going to be interesting to see how good she can be as the season goes on."

Jones joins men's swimmer Luke Wilkens as the second Viking to earn Swimmer of the Week honors this year. Wilkens received the honor last week.

The Vikings head to Eastern Michigan on Friday (Nov. 12) before returning to Busbey Natatorium on Monday (Nov. 15) for the City College Meet with Baldwin-Wallace, Gannon and John Carroll beginning at 2:00 p.m.
