Atlanta, Ga. - Five Vikings swam on day one of the 2011 AT&T Winter National Championships on Thursday (Dec. 1) morning at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.

The three-day event, which concludes on Saturday (Dec. 3), is a long course competition to allow participants an opportunity to achieve Olympic Trials qualifying standards.

Joanna Olsson (2:25.14) participated in the 200 meter IM and Alice Sommerville (27.45) competed in the 50 meter free.

Justin Hill (24.17), Berry Thompson (24.33) and Alex Lewis (24.42) all represented Cleveland State in the 50 meter free.

"Our best day is still to come and despite that, we had some very good swims this morning," assistant coach Andrew Hancock said. Hancock and assistant coach April Woo are overseeing the 10 swimmers in Atlanta.

"To have several athletes swim their best times at this meet is very encouraging because this environment makes it tough to do so. We are shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the best athletes in the history of our sport at this meet," Hancock said.

Olsson will compete again tomorrow in the 400 IM and Sommerville in the 100 fly and 100 breast. Carys Behn will smim in her first event, the 200 free, and Alexandra Johansson will make her only appearance in the 100 back.

On the men's side, both Lewis and Thompson will return to do the 100 fly tomorrow and Nathan Grant and Brian Ferro will debut in the 100 breast.

Saturday, Behn finishes with the 100 free and Thompson will do the same event on the men's side. Grant and Ferro will conclude with the 200 breast and Olsson and Justin Kermack will compete in the final event of the meet, the 200 fly.
