Men Finish Third, Women Fifth At MCC Swimming & Diving Championships

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The UWM women and the Wright State men took home the MCC Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday night at the Schroeder YMCA Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wis.

The Panthers scored 811.50 points to win the championship, while Wright State came in second with 749.50 points. Green Bay finished in third with 671 points, followed by UIC in fourth (358.50 ), Cleveland State in fifth (334 ), and Butler in sixth (281.50).

Wright State's men's team, who led throughout the entire championship, finished strong to win with 703 points. Green Bay finished second with 636 points and Cleveland State took third place with 581 points. Fourth-place went to UWM with 574 points, while UIC took fifth (472) and Butler finished sixth (289).

Women's MCC Coach of the Year honors went to UWM coach Dave Clark, while Wright State coach Matt Liddy was named MCC Coach of the Year for the men. UWM's Amanda Chan was named Outstanding Performer for the women and UIC's Paul Torres was named the same for the men. Roberta Borkowski was named Outstanding Diver for the women, while UIC's Michael Magee picked up the same honor for the men. Wright State's Jackie Dexter won MCC Newcomer of the Year honors for the women and Dan Brzozowski of Green Bay won Newcomer honors for the men.

In the women's 1650-yard freestyle, Wright State's Julie Coghlan persevered with the first-place finish in 17:19.55. Erika Dobratz of UW-Green Bay finished second in 17:27.51 and Cleveland State's Jennifer Henshaw took third in 17:30.31.

Cleveland State's Audrey Gray won the 200 backstroke in 2:05.68, with Green Bay's swimmers finishing second and third. Danielle Grube took second in 2:07.57 and Erika Dobratz in 2:08.89.

Green Bay picked up first and third-places finishes in the 100-yard freestyle while Wright State grabbed second. Kaye-Lani Laughna won the even in 52.39, Katie Tippett took second in 53.20, and Alison Winters finished third in 53.27.

UWM's Amanda Chan broke the MCC Championship record in the 200-yard breastroke to win the event. Her finish of 2:20.20 smashed the previous record of 2:21.03 set in 1996. Green Bay's Melissa Schweinert took second place with a time of 2:21.13 and Butler's Melinda Harrald took third in 2:24.56.

Erin McPeak of Butler won the 200 fly in 2:09.83, while CSU's Jennifer Henshaw took second (2:11.18) and UWM's Beth Watt finished third (2:11.49).

In Saturday's diving event, WSU's Roberta Borkowski won the 1-meter with 269.25 points, followed by UWM's Krystina Herzog (262.05) and Jamie Cyganiak (250.75).

The women's events rounded up with the 400 free relay, won by Green Bay in 3:31.58. Wright .State finished second in 3:33.59, and UWM took third in 3:36.08.

In the men's 1650 free, Cleveland State's Andrew Hancock won in 15:53.51 while RJ Szelc took third in 16:12.71. Butler's Brett Balhoff finished right behind Szelc in 16:12.86.

Cleveland State's Ryan Kuhlmey took the 200 backstroke in 1:50.43. Wright State's Osiris Briseno finished second in 1:52.09 and UWGB's Aaron Cummings third with a time of 1:52.95.

Cleveland State also won the 100 free, as Gustavo Barrios finished ahead in 45.48. Wright State's Carl Thompson took second in 45.49 and Butler's John Lowell took third in 45.83.

In the 200 breaststroke, Wright State's Drew Fiden smashed the MCC record to win the event in 2:01.35. Illinois-Chicago placed the next top two swimmers, as Diego Lora took second in 2:01.48 and Paul Torres took third in 2:01.58.

Daniel Brzozowski of Green Bay won the 200 fly in 1:52.17, while CSU's Andrew Hancock took third (1:52.85) and UWM's Peter Clark took third (1:54.69).

In Saturday's diving event final, UWM's Nic Seider won the 3-meter wth 499.15 points. UIC's Charles Rock followed with 474.60 points and Mike Magee with 464.55 points.

UWM won the final competition of the MCC Championship, finishing 3:03.39 in the 400 free relay. Wright State just missed first by half a second, finishing in 3:03.92. Cleveland State took third with a time of 3:04.27.
