Men Third, Women Fifth After Two Days At MCC Swimming & Diving Championships

MILWAUKEE - Day two of the MCC Swimming and Diving Championship saw a similar finish to the opening day, as the UWM women and Wright State men remain on top of the championship for the second straight night. The Panthers lead the women with 535 points, while the Raiders are ahead of the men with 477 points.

The Wright State women are in second with 514 points and Green Bay in third with 435 points. Illinois-Chicago finished fourth with 221.50 points and Cleveland State a close fifth with 220 points. Butler's 166.50 points gave them sixth place at the end of Friday night's events. On the men's side, Green Bay is in second with 408 points followed by Cleveland State's 372 points. UWM is in fourth with 347 points, UIC in fifth with 290 points, and Butler in sixth with 198 points.

Friday's swimming finals opened with the Wright State women winning the 200 medley relay in 1:47.58. Green Bay took second with a time of 1:48.40 and UWM finished third in 1:49.46.

In the women's 400 IM, Cleveland State's Jennifer Henshaw won in 4:31.86. Milwaukee's Leslie Brock finished second in 4:37.13 and Melissa Schmidt of Wright State took thir in 4:39.58. Jackie Dexter of Wright State broke the conference championship record in the 100 fly, winning the event in 56.55. UWM's Beth Watt finished in second (58.61) and UIC's Katie Cherwin in third (58.87).

UWM's Kelly Goetsch won the 200 free in 1:54.81, followed by Green Bay's second and third-place finishes with Danielle Grube in 1:54.91 and Kaye-La Laughna in 1:55.49. In the 100 Breast, Amanda Chan of UWM took first in 1:06.44 and Melissa Schweinert of Green Bay took second in 1:06.98. UWM's Kristin Cefalu finished third with a time of 1:07.08.

Audrey Gray of Cleveland State won the 100 backstroke in 58.67. Wright State's swimmers took second and third as Chasi Riley swam 58.69 and Katie Colmenares in 59.39.

The women's events ended with UWGB winning the 800 free relay in 7:42.43, resetting the MCC Championship record. UWM's relay came in second with 7:42.99 and Cleveland State in third with 7:51.58.

The men's events opened with Wright State finishing first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:32.15. Green Bay's time of 1:33.48 finished second, while Cleveland State took third in 1:33.67.

In the men's 400 IM, Illinois-Chicago's Paul Torres won in 4:00.93 and Cleveland State's Mauricio Barrios took second in 4:03.95. Daniel Brzozowski of Green Bay garnered a third place finish with 4:04.95. Wright State's Carl Thompson won the 100 fly in 50.46, with Cleveland State's Gustavo Barrios finishing second (50.68) and Green Bay's Zachery Hansen in third (50.94).

UWM took the first two finishes in the 200 free, as Matt Schmaling won in 1:42.09 and Peter Clark followed with 1:42.31. Butler's John Lowell took third with a time of 1:42.99. In the 100 breaststroke, it was Wright State's Drew Fiden who reset the MCC record. Fiden finished in 55.60, smashing the previous record of 56.61. Cleveland State's Warren Vickers took second in 56.46 and UIC's Diego Lora took third in 57.09.

UIC swept the 100 backstroke, as Tom Schwingen won in 52.95 followed by David Kimmerly in second (53.06) and Joakim Skrabb in third (53.77).

In the 800 freestyle relay, Cleveland State finished in first with a time of 6:49.76. UWM's team came in second in 6:49.80 and Green Bay placed third in 6:54.36.

The MCC Championship wraps up on Saturday, with swimming prelims beginning at 10:30 a.m. Diving finals start at 2 p.m. and swimming and diving finals again at 6 p.m. Conference awards will be given following the last event on Saturday night.
